What the Cholla Cactus Garden is

What the Cholla Cactus Garden is

The Cholla Cactus Garden is a dense natural colony of teddy bear cholla growing across nearly 10 acres of the Pinto Basin. It lies in the transition zone between the Colorado and Mojave Deserts.

Detached cholla stems can take root and grow into new plants. Because the stems are often too heavy for wind to carry, the colony tends to expand where it is—one explanation for the name “garden.” In spring, the park’s yellow-green flowers add color to the cactus-covered landscape.

Planning the drive and checking access

Planning the drive and checking access

The garden is about 12 miles south of the park’s north entrance, along Pinto Basin Road, a popular destination route. Parking accommodates automobiles and buses or RVs, and the stop has a trailhead, an information kiosk or bulletin board, and a scenic-view and photo spot.

Before setting out, check the official site before you go for current road and trail conditions. Joshua Tree National Park is open around the clock throughout the year, but there are no gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, hotels or water in the park interior.

The National Park Service recommends checking its current closures map and using its official app for accurate information.

Walking the garden safely

Walking the garden safely

The flat 0.25-mile loop takes about 15–30 minutes and gains 10 feet in elevation. Its hard-packed sand and boardwalk sections cross a dense patch of cholla, with views toward the Pinto Basin and surrounding mountains.

Wear closed shoes: cholla segments can detach and cling to people or animals with sharp spines. Stay on the designated trail to protect the delicate ecological area. Pets are not allowed on the trail; service animals are welcome.

The trail has one standard accessible parking space and 21 standard parking spaces. The nearest restroom is at Live Oak Picnic Area, approximately 12 miles north on Park Boulevard. Best conditions to check before visiting

Best conditions to check before visiting

The garden trail has no shade and no cell service, so weather and timing matter. The National Park Service advises checking the forecast and reconsidering plans if conditions are extreme. For a summer hike, it recommends starting before 10 a.m. and bringing plenty of water.

Sand may be loose or deeper in places depending on weather. Tell a safety buddy where you are going and when you plan to leave the park, as the National Park Service recommends.

Adding the garden to a wider park route

Allow 15–30 minutes for the loop itself, then account for your drive and any other stops on the park route. The garden works as a short walk along Pinto Basin Road; a one-day Joshua Tree National Park itinerary can help you plan a fuller day around it.
